Cross Country Trip

In September of this year, we will be making our cross country drive from Virginia to Washington State.  Both David and I couldn’t be happier that we are being relocated ‘back home’ for a few years.  We are planning on taking about two weeks to drive across the country, hoping to visit many friends and family along the way.

No, I won’t be packing Luna in a suitcase, although it does seem to be an entertaining idea.

Being the focused, eager, (non-procrastinator) that I am, I have started a shopping list of things that I think would make for a smooth and comfortable trip for both Luna and us.

#1- Car first aid kit

TP751_230X230Contains one tweezer, one pair of scissors, two 2"x 2" gauze pads, two 3" x 3" gauze pads, three alcohol prep pads, two antiseptic swabs, two iodine prep pads, one 2" x 5 yard roll of pet wrap bandage, one bottle of styptic powder, one Mylar emergency blanket, two pairs of latex gloves, and a basic first aid booklet.

#2- Durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean collapsible crate.  This should come in handy for hotel rooms, family and friends living rooms or bedrooms.

#3- Pop-Up Food Storage Bin and food/water bowl. Stay-open wire frame design is collapsible for easy storage.

#4- Skooperbox waste removal tool.  Now, I have never used these neat, earth friendly scooper boxes, but the idea seems to be a lot better than the traditional bag.  Has anyone ever used these before, or can someone recommend a convenient product for picking up poo while on the road?

I already have in my possession these important items; seatbelt, water resistant bed/pillow, back seat car hammock, leashes and collar, ID and paperwork.

This will be my first time driving Luna across the country and I want to make sure that I am prepared in every possible manner. If anyone has done any traveling with their pooches, I would love to hear any tips or recommendations that you may have.

We always carried box of baby wipes. Good for cleaning paws, dirty butts or drool.
Don't forget her cookies. Or a bag of kibbles for an occasional snack.
You might want to check with her vet if there is something she could take if she should get car sick along the way?? And the vet might have some travel tips.

We are happy you get to go back home, especially so Grandma can have some Luna time. Those are some very cool products you found!

We travel in our House With Wheels, so we always have all our stuff, but if we are gone for more than a week, Mom makes sure that she has some stuff from the vet (my little-big sister is 17 years old, and my cat brother is 19 and diabetic, so she makes sure that she is prepared), including Metacam (a pain reliever/anti-inflammatory), diazepam (human Valium) and antibiotics. My mom also carries some Pepto Bismal (?) and a dropper, in case any of us gets an upset stummy on the road. And some Benadryl in case any of us gets a little to close to something that stings... She also just uses the little portable plastic bags (that go in a little pouch on our leashes - you can get the whole thing at Petco for cheap) to pick up our poop.

*whew* She takes a lot of stuff!

Have a good trip!

We have a collapsible water bowl for Sophie that we take on hikes with us. It is soooo great! I agree with the wet wipes too. Good idea.

ELizabeth, you are so organized. I'm sure you'll be doing just fine in the road, with such a focused Mummy! :)

I totally agree on the wet wipes and some upset tummy remedy relief. If it's hot there, maybe some way of carrying ice cubes or somethinh really fresh, like a cooler bandana. If it's rainy, a coat too.

I have "vacation tags" for my boys. There is no point in using their regular tags with our home address and phone number if we're not there! On the front of the tags I put all our cell phone numbers (plus my MIL's), and on the back their microchip numbers and 800 number for the company.

I got plastic bone-shaped ones here that are really nice:

I always pack a couple bottles of whatever water Sam is used to drinking... Sometimes you stop somewhere and they just won't drink whatever is available. You can then either pour them a full bottle of what they are used to, or mix it a bit. We've travelled with Sam a few times, and every once and a while we've hit a spot where he just won't drink what is available - even if we buy him bottled. It has been a lifesaver to have a little of what he is familiar with! It is also a good idea to have water anyway! You never know what happens along the way! Have fune!
